What is a door jamb?

A door jamb is the vertical portion of the door frame onto which the door is secured. It provides the structural support for the door and houses the strike plate, where the door latch engages. Key functions include:

  • Structural Support: It's crucial for supporting the weight of the door.
  • Door Alignment: Ensures the door hangs straight and closes properly.
  • Attachment Point: Serves as the anchor for hinges and the strike plate.

A typical door frame has two jambs, one on each side of the door opening, as well as a head jamb that runs horizontally across the top. Jambs are typically made of wood, but can also be made of metal or composite materials. Damage to the jamb can cause issues with the door's operation, requiring repair or replacement.
